A Liturgy for Art as a Means, Not an End

Photo Series Title: "When the Spirit Moves, So Do I."

I breathe in God,

divine inspiration.

Lord, give me the grace

to inhale for the sake of your presence only,

not for the expectation of some masterpiece.

I listen for the Spirit:

When He shows me visions,

I paint.

When He whispers words,

I write.

When He gives me new sight,

I photograph.

When he expands my heart to love others,

I produce and direct.

When God speaks,

“Artist, go!”

who am I to deny the One who is in the wind?

I pray for

divine inspiration

divine ideas

divine artistry.

Just as I work through

cameras and paints

stage lights and scripts,

I offer You the medium of myself.

I want Beauty to make its way to Earth.

Whether it be theater, dance, writing, photography, or painting,

I want to be nothing more than a paper straw,

slowly disintegrating

with a limited time of use

a momentary channel.

Let me create

what the Creator would give me the honor

of simply passing through

my mind

my hands

and into His creation.

I will continue to garden

even when my life feels more like a desert.

Your call to create

is not dependent on my emotions,

or even on my talent.

Helper, give me the grace to create for an audience of One

even when I stand nightly in front of crowds of thousands.

Lord, we need your beauty.

We need to stand in awe.

Thank you for art that reveals You,

the One who gives

eyes to see and ears to hear.

May it all point to You.

Art as a means, not an end.

Artists as a means, not an end.

Artists loved more than their art.

The Creator loved more than our creations.
